I am saddened by the national crisis taking place due to the disturbing and senseless death of George Floyd by a Minneapolis, MN police officer.
None of us should have to see an African American man being killed on video, calling out to his deceased mother and saying the words, "Please, I can't breathe," Then, watching other police officers stand by and do nothing. It's 2020 and not what America should stand for.
We have to continue relying on God's power and respect one another by walking in peace. I understand the frustrations and hurt, and most importantly understand the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., "A riot is the language of the unheard," however, vandalism and hate are not the keys to change.
Change starts with prayer, love, organizing with a purpose, completing your 2020 Census, and holding every elected official from the President down to the local level accountable. We can begin overcoming inequality and the injustices of the criminal system by voting in our State and Presidential Primaries.
Almost every aspect of our lives is affected by policies, which are made by politicians who are put into office by those who vote. Unfortunately, there's a percentage of politicians who only focus on their agenda instead of on policies that genuinely affect how we treat people.
Your vote matters not only in the presidential election but also for elected local and state politicians who pass laws that directly affect your day-to-day life. Such as issues on civil rights, health care, pay equality, criminal justice reform, environmental protection, college affordability, hate crime legislation, affordable housing, women's rights, and workers' rights.
If you do not like the current leadership at the national, state, and local levels, then vote them out by voting for people who respect and serve all people. If you need more insight about a candidate running for office, do an online search to learn about their record, values, beliefs, and what they stand for. It's best to research every candidate before voting so that you can make an informed decision.
The following states, as well as the District of Columbia and US Virgin Islands, will hold primary elections starting this week as part of the 2020 election:
June 2 - Indiana, Iowa, Montana, Maryland, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and the District of Columbia
June 6 - US Virgin Islands
June 9 - Georgia, Nevada, North Dakota, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia
June 23 - Kentucky, Mississippi, New York, and North Carolina
June 30 - Colorado, Oklahoma, and Utah.
Most of the remaining states will hold primaries in July, August or September, so check your county or state election sites for up to date details about voter registration, early voting, mail-in voting, and more. The 2020 United States presidential election is Tuesday, November 3.
Stay informed, and most importantly, stay prayerful that as a country, we can make an impact by voting for people who bring people together versus tearing people apart.
